What does it mean to be fluent in a foreign language?

Most of you will never be fluent in the foreign language you are learning, at least according to me. I have constantly wondered what the meaning of the word “fluent” is. If you have a heavy accent, but can speak a foreign language, are you considered fluent? If you have a perfect accent, but sometimes don’t understand what someone is saying to you, are you considered fluent? How about if sometimes when you are talking to someone, you don’t know to express or explain something, but if you had to say it in English (or whatever your native language is), you could do it effortlessly?
I hear about people who are fluent in other languages all the time. I know there are people who can speak more than 1 language fluently, but I sometimes wonder if people’s definition of fluent is different from mine. Being fluent in a foreign language takes a lot of hard work, so when I recently heard about a friend of a friend who spent a year in a country and can speak it fluently, I think it really meant that someone spent a year learning a foreign language and has made really good progress, but I don’t think they are really fluent.

How to use Sanbit

I just wanted to give an introduction on what Sanbit was built for and how it is being used.
I have been studying Chinese Mandarin, Chinese Cantonese for a few years. To help improve my vocabulary and reading comprehension, I spent a lot of time reading books written in Chinese. Everytime I found a new word I did not know, I would write it down in a notebook and then after I collected a pages worth of new vobaculary words, I would pull out a dictionary and look up the meaning of all the words and write down the definitions and sometimes example usage of the words.

Start Reading

I recommend that you start reading in the language you are learning as soon as you can. The benefits are that you can start picking up new vocabulary and grammar and test out your reading comprehension. While you are reading, make sure to keep a paper and pencil with you. Every time you come across a new word that you don’t understand, write it down along with the page number so you can reference it easily. You could stop immediately and look up the word, but if you are at an early stage of learning that language, you will probably be looking up a new word every few seconds.

Computer Environment

When learning a foreign language, it is important to immerse yourself into the language as much as possible. Eat,sleep, and talk the language you are learning. One way I help force myself to use a language is to switch my computer enviroment to use the language I am currently learning.

Welcome to Sanbit

Hi everyone. Just wanted to give a quick introduction. Sanbit is a platform designed to help you learn a foreign language as fast and efficiently as possible. Of course the best thing to do to learn a foreign language is go live in the counry or area where that language is spoken, but not everyone can do that. And if even if you can do that, we still highly recommend that you use Sanbit to help you furtherer your learning. We have made tools for every part of learning a language: vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. To be able to use a language, you don’t need to work on all those skills, but the more you use those other skills, the more it helps you overall.

In the next few blog posts we will go over in detail each of the features of sanbit. For now, if you need more information, please make sure to read the introduction and about page.
We are looking for beta testers who want to give feedback and help shape the direction of the site (while at the same time learning a foreign language)!! Please contact us at the contact page at the bottom of the page or email us at feedback[at]sanbit.com and we will get back to you. Enjoy!
